In September 2011, nine Canadians went on the trip of a lifetime. Cycling more than 400 km along the coast of Vietnam, they met both a personal challenge and a global one.

They also challenged their friends and families to join them, raising over $27,000 to support CARE’s work fighting global poverty.

In addition to a beautiful and often challenging cycle, the group visited a CARE project to see an example of the kind of work they were supporting.  They participated in a community meeting, seeing a program where CARE trains local facilitators who then return to their communities to pass on the knowledge.

This unique aspect of the trip made an impression on the cyclists:

“I loved seeing different aspects of the project - getting to see a real meeting in progress and having a sneak peek at their community process was great.  And after seeing a well that had been constructed by the community with CARE’s help we could really see the difference it makes in their community.” - Kerra McEwen, Calgary, AB

“Even though we couldn't understand them until we got the translation we could see and hear their pride and passion in participating, in their achievements so far, in their excitement at the future." - Lori Heximer, Rossland, BC

“It was wonderful to see their community mobilizing for change, and to have such a warm welcome. It was also great to see the Khmer people working alongside the Vietnamese together for a common goal," Nadia Guérette, Gaspé, QC  (translated from French)
